Artists, writers and musicians have been drawn to Mount’s Bay for centuries, creating a vibrant artistic culture as well as some incredible artworks. If you want to find out more about the history and art of this area, start with a visit to Penlee House Gallery & Museum, located in a lovely park towards the west of the town. As well as a programme of fascinating exhibitions, Penlee has a permanent collection from the Newlyn School artists, such as Lamorna Birch, Laura Knight and Walter Langley. There are also exhibitions about prehistoric Penwith and Penzance social history. Don’t miss the cafe…

Next up is the Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange. These two places move us forward from Penlee’s collection, into modern Cornwall’s thriving art scene. The two spaces, one in Newlyn and the other in the centre of Penzance, hold exhibitions of contemporary Cornish art, and both also operate as community hubs. Look out for workshops as well as exhibitions.

Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens.

Here’s a different approach to appreciating art: a collection of contemporary sculptures displayed among the subtropical planting of this unique Penzance garden. Walk along its paths and meadows, enjoying the views across Mount’s Bay and the surprising encounters with art installations. Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens is one of the Bay’s most unique attractions, and is home to a gallery, cafe and succulents’ nursery as well as the gardens themselves.

Independent Galleries in Mount’s Bay.

If you love pottering around smaller, independent galleries, you’re in for a treat in Mount’s Bay. Look out for the Summerhouse Gallery and Market House Gallery in Marazion, and Cornwall Contemporary and Lighthouse Gallery in Penzance.

Mount’s Bay Heritage.

Smugglers, pirates, invading armies, shipwrecks… Yes, Mount’s Bay’s history really does feature all these adventure-book events. One of the best ways to learn about the local history is to take the Penzance Heritage Trail, a self-guided tour around some of the town’s most significant spots. Of course, a visit to St Michael’s Mount will also give you some real insights into the lives of people from the Bay, as will a trip to Penlee House.
