Places to Pick Strawberries this Summer.

With Wimbledon under way and the school holidays shortly upon us, thoughts turn naturally to strawberries! So we’ve done a round up of great spots for the best home-grown strawberries in Cornwall, at some of which you can even pick your own! According to the All England Club, more than 28 tons – 1.4 million actual strawberries – are eaten each year during the fortnight-long tournament. That’s more than 140,000 punnets! Well, although you may well not be lucky enough to go there in-person, here’s a round-up of some places to pick strawberries in Cornwall this Summer. It’s great fun to do with the family – and if you want to relax in your glorious holiday home, then this is the perfect accompaniment to some TV-based grass court action!

Mitchell Fruit Garden, Newquay.

This family owned and run farm is located just outside Newquay. Strawberries are available to pick from June to September. You can also get your own gooseberries! Although many crops are grown outside, there are now more areas covered with plastic tunnels to keep the Cornish liquid summer at bay.

Trevathen Farm, Port Isaac.

Trevathan is a working farm and has been farmed by the Symons family since 1850. A variety of crops are grown on the 300 acres including the pick-your-own business which started with just strawberries but now includes a wide range of soft fruit and vegetables which are also sold in the farm shop and used in their tearoom.

Trevaskis Farm, Hayle.

Trevaskis Farm is set amidst 28 acres of beautiful Hayle countryside, you can choose from an abundance of fruit and vegetables and with information signs dotted around the farm park you can learn while you wander. Best of all, farm entrance is free! You only pay for what you pick. From loganberries to gooseberries, apples to beans, peas, raspberries, and not forgetting strawberries,­ there’s something for everyone. Even if the rain sets in, welly boots and puddles are great, not to mention the all-weather polytunnels!

Boddington’s Berries, Mevagissey.

Established in the 1940s as a market garden, Boddington’s Berries is now run by the third generation of the family. They have built up a considerable trade supplying fresh strawberries and conserves to a wide range of wholesalers, caterers, and retailers. 

The PYO is open by appointment ONLY and you need to bring your own containers. The great thing is that rather than weighing and paying for your fruit, they are charging for a half-hour picking slot to pick and taste as much as you would like.
