Sometimes, a holiday is just what we need to refresh our minds and bodies. There’s something about an escape to the coast that is even more special, whether you’re here to swim, walk or simply to wave-watch from a beachside cafe. We love the coast just to the east of St Ives between Carbis Bay and Gwithian. This sweep of sandy bays and cliff top walks also takes in Hayle and pretty Lelant, and because it’s less well-known than neighbouring St Ives, is often a quieter option for a coastal retreat. Fresh Sea Breezes to Relax in West Cornwall.
Just stepping out of the car and into that ozone-fresh air is enough to make a difference. Your Cornish holiday starts the moment you feel the first sea breeze and breathe in its salt tang. From walks along the dramatic North Cliffs to scampering on the sand at Porthkidney, this area is full of beautiful spaces where you can enjoy the fresh air and freedom of the coast.
The signpost to Hayle promises “Three miles of golden sand”. This isn’t hyperbole: the sandy bay here stretches on and on, changing in character as it goes but always offering beautiful views. There’s plenty of room for everyone here and you can always find a space for yourself.
Open Water Swimming to Relax in West Cornwall.
Over the last few years, Britain has really embraced open water swimming, also known as wild swimming. As you can imagine, the Cornish coast is full of beautiful places to enjoy the water and there’s nothing quite as invigorating as a dip in the sea (even if you’re a splasher or a paddler rather than a serious swimmer).
We’ve written about our favourite sea swimming spots in Cornwall. Drive further east from Hayle to Portreath to enjoy the beach and “Rocky Pool”, or head back west to Carbis Bay for a sheltered swim.
Sea Pools and Lidos.
As a compromise, you could choose to swim in a sea pool or a lido rather than the sea. This still gives you the gorgeous experience of swimming under the sky, but in calmer water.
We love Hayle Lido: smaller and less famous than Jubilee Pool in Penzance, but so friendly and welcoming and with a lovely little cafe. The water feels fresh and silky, and the scent of the flowers and herbs planted poolside creates an unexpectedly Mediterranean feel. A Seaside Sauna to Relax in West Cornwall.
This is unexpected: a sauna in Hayle’s North Quay. Escape to the Sauna is a wood-fired sauna on Hayle Estuary, with wonderful views over the water. After an energising dip, retreat to the inviting barrel-shaped beach sauna and relax in the softy scented warmth.
Book your session in advance and look out for special events such as the Full Moon Saunas. End the evening with food and drink at Gilbert’s next door – or book a break at 14 An Garth, which could hardly be closer.
Invigorating Walks.
A coastal walk, at any time of year, is a sure way to blow those cobwebs away. Discover the South West Coast Path between Carbis Bay and Hayle, enjoying those famously Caribbean-esque views and stopping for food and drink in Lelant village.
We love exploring Upton Towans Nature Reserve near Gwithian, criss-crossed with sandy paths and scattered with industrial ruins from the old explosives works. Alternatively, park in the National Trust car park at Godrevy for views across to the lighthouse. Look out for the grey seal colony, the grazing ponies and the many sea birds.
Relaxing Treats.
If you enjoy yoga, a session on the beach is a wonderful holiday treat. There are several practitioners offering beach yoga sessions around Hayle and St Ives, offering classes for all abilities.
West Cornwall also has a selection of day spas for beauty treatments and exercise or relaxation classes. Spas with indoor pools are an especially lovely discovery if you’re here during the cooler months. You could even book a holiday cottage in St Ives that includes a spa pass, offering discounts on treatments and access to steam rooms and saunas!
