Port Isaac is a vibrant village with a small but busy fishing harbour and narrow streets full of independent shops, galleries and places to eat. It is also close to some of Cornwall’s best beaches and coastal scenery, while destinations like Padstow, Tintagel and Bodmin are short drives away.

Port Isaac Village and Harbour.

Our favourite thing to do in Port Isaac is simply to explore the pretty old streets. The jumble of old fisher cottages makes for one of the most photogenic spots in North Cornwall. Wriggle through the 18-inch-wide Squeezy Belly Alley before making your way to the fresh open spaces at the Platt and the beach.

If you are a Doc Martin fan, you have the added pleasure of looking out for film locations. You can spot places like the surgery, Bert’s restaurant and Louisa’s house as well as the Golden Lion pub, which featured as the Crab & Lobster.

Exploring the Coast near Port Isaac.

Port Isaac is in the Cornwall National Landscape (formerly known as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, AONB). The best way to appreciate its breathtaking good looks is by foot. 

Take the South West Coast Path towards Polzeath and its glorious sandy beach, or continue along until you reach Padstow (this walk is over 11 miles, so you may want to take a taxi back to Port Isaac).If you walk in the other direction, you will eventually get to Tintagel and some of the most impressive coastal views in the county. 

For a shorter walk, head for Port Gaverne where you will be rewarded with a pleasant beach, plenty of rock pooling opportunities and some excellent seafood. Want to see the coast from a different angle? There is a choice of boat trips from Port Isaac, such as wildlife spotting tours and fishing trips.

Port Isaac's Beaches.

Port Isaac’s own beach is shingley, but if you are in search of sand, you will soon find it. There are several sandy beaches right on Port Isaac’s doorstep, starting with the cove at Port Gaverne. Slightly further afield, there is much-loved Polzeath, a Blue Flag beach with surf school and lots of handy facilities. On holiday with your pup? Daymer Bay is dog friendly all year round.

Trebarwith Strand is a short drive away, and is a good family and dog-friendly option. Just be aware that the beach disappears at high tide, so plan your trip here carefully. If your tribe prefers exploring rock pools to playing in the sand, nearby Port Quin is a quiet cove full of miniature adventures.
